The sun is coming out, friends are meeting at the park to play. Cherry blossoms and tulips are springing up all over the city- it’s a good time to live in NYC. Scroll through to reminisce on the past month and look forward to all that is to come in May.
Children’s Ministry Newsletter- May
A word from Scott…
Any individual may be of a certain personality type, may have certain gifts and virtues, and may be well equipped to handle certain situations. It can be frustrating when there is a mismatch – for example, some people go into a career they find appealing but aren’t well suited for and find themselves frustrated. One challenge with parenting is that unlike a job, where you can exercise the power of choice (to get trained, to press on, to quit and go into a new field), as a parent you “get what you get and you don’t get upset” (kindergarten teachers say that, but only because they anticipate the kids getting upset).
You may be very well suited to care for and do life with a certain kind of child, and if you happen to have that kind of child, you and the child will have a (mostly) great relationship. The problem is, you can’t choose the profile of your child, and further, children change, so you may be particularly well suited to some stages but have great difficulty with others.
This means you may be forced to do the very things you otherwise try to avoid in life, like: doing something that is very important but that you don’t feel competent for; having to take a breath and apply patience with great frequency; showing kindness when it doesn’t appear to be having any positive effect; making sacrifices for another who appears to denying any form of reciprocity; etc.
If you read the teachings of Jesus, they are targeted at precisely these kinds of situations. It is not simply that you must do these things if you are a follower of Jesus, but Jesus is telling you that you can do these things, that life in him will send you into these kinds of situations and you will be forced to depend on him in them. We discover one of the things we have become skilled in life at is avoiding living by faith, and parenting confronts us frequently with the fact that we need to depend on God or otherwise will make a ruin of things. One application of the hope of the gospel is that as we do things in the strength of Christ we find God glorifies Himself by doing great things in those situations, even (perhaps especially) when we are weak.
How long have you been volunteering with CM? This could be a bold faced lie, but I’ll say 2 years?
Why do you like serving with Children’s Ministry? I love being around children because their joy and energy is infectious, and I am so encouraged in my faith when I see kids growing in their love of Jesus.
Outside of volunteering, what are you passionate about or what occupies your time? I sadly don’t get to indulge very much anymore, but I am very passionate about outdoor sports, particularly backpacking and fly-fishing. Perhaps one day…
What’s your favorite insider NYC tip or favorite place in the city to take visitors? I travel constantly for work and I generally don’t have time to see the touristy sights, so I see the world through restaurants and a city’s local food scene. Therefore, when I have visitors in town, I leave museum and show tips to others and I take them out to eat. It’s Di Fara’s for pizza, Katz’s for pastrami, Absolute for bagels, or a trek to Flushing in search of the perfect Xiao Long Bao.
Eugene, you and your family are such an integral part of our EPC community and we can’t imagine each Sunday without you five. The ways you serve and contribute to the church are numerous. Despite your hectic schedule you find opportunities to serve, and lead often without recognition and always done with endless joy! Thank you!
June 17th 8-10PM

PLEASE RSVP so we can provide enough refreshments.
As in intregal part of the transition plan for EPC we are currently recruiting for this new position. Please feel free to share this job description with anyone in the city that you think may fit the bill and also be PRAYING that God will send the right person to come serve our church in this capacity.
