Emmanuel Friends –
At several points this year I talked about how our church life syncs with the natural rhythm of the city (fall/connecting, winter/deepening, spring/reaching out, summer/resting). The summer is here and this provides opportunities for rest. With many in our church taking vacation at various parts of the summer, we don’t plan many events. Home groups may take a break, meet occasionally for social events, or stay the course with whoever is available. We will shorten our Sunday services a little. This provides the chance for the church to connect informally, invite others to a concert in the park, reach out to a few home groups to see if you can round up a group for a picnic, reach out to the person you have been meaning to get to know and invite them to coffee, or slow down and practice praying on your own and reading longer sections of the Bible. And this being New York, many of you will still be overwhelmed.
Rest certainly comes from ceasing, so take the opportunities you have to take a break. But real deep rest is a gift from God, and has its roots in a life leaning on Christ for all things. Take a break from work, take a break from your regular commitments, but don’t take a break from your walk with God. Rather, seize the opportunity to cultivate the enjoyment of God.
