Hebrews 10:19-25 (ESV)
19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Sermon Outline
We need to meet together:

1. With a community of faith and hope

  • v22 “draw near… full assurance of faith”

  • v23 “hold fast the confession of hope without wavering”

2. For encouragement to practice the ways of Jesus

  • v24 “stir up one another to love and good works”

  • v25 “encouraging one another”

3. To process and apply Christianity to the present

  • vv19-22 “since… the new and living way… sprinkled clean”

  • v24 “let us consider”

Prayer of Confession
Holy God, our confidence to come before you is only because we have a great High Priest. Jesus opened for us a new and living way, and we want to walk in it. We confess our failings. Our hearts do not have assurance because our faith is weak. We have acted contrary to your ways. Our hope wavers because we look to the wrong things. We have not honored you. With pride and shame, we have withdrawn from you and your people. We have discouraged others and have been discouraged. Cleanse our hearts by your Holy Spirit and fill us with your love. By faith and with hope let us devote ourselves to good works that are pleasing in your sight. Forgive us and help us. Amen.

Questions for Reflection

  1. What benefits do you get from being with other people or being part of a community?

  2. What is hard about being with people?

  3. How does pride affect how we relate to others (who we associate with, how we experience social groups, etc.)?  How does shame?

  4. How do faith, hope and love work together?  What does each contribute to a community?

  5. What makes for a community that stirs those in that community to love and good works?  What is needed?

  6. Why is encouragement an important community practice?

  7. How does Christian community have its foundation in Jesus and what he has done for us?  What difference does his suffering/death make, and what difference does his ascension into heaven make?

  8. What adaptations do we need to figure out together?  How have relationships and community changed and what are some important areas for Christians to think through?
